Carnival or Carnevale is currently in full swing in Italy. Adults and children alike are dressing up in costumes and enjoying the numerous sweet culinary delights and celebrations throughout the country.
Venice has one of the most famous carnivals in the world and draws thousands of tourists each year to join in the city's festivities and show off elaborate costumes and masks.

Celebrations aren't limited to the larger cities though. Even the smaller towns and villages have organized festivities including floats, fancy dress contests, concerts and other activities.
Frappe, as they are known in Rome (they also go by different names depending on the region of Italy) are a typical carnival food. These crispy, sweet treats are one of the popular traditions of this period.
